The mission of the English as a Second Language Program at Graystone Academy Charter School is to provide support and intensive instruction in English to Non and Limited English Proficient students which will enable them to become successful in the mainstream classroom.
Upon enrolling your child in Graystone Academy Charter School, a Home Language Survey is completed by the parent(s)/guardian(s). Any indication that a language other than English is spoken in the home requires that the ESL professional staff assess the student for placement in the ESL program.
ESL services are based on students' English proficiency levels. Instruction is always age and grade appropriate. The primary focus of instruction is on the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The instruction occurs across the content areas. Each year, all students in the ESL program are given the WIDA ACCESS test to check their progress on their English acquisition.
Both ESL Teachers and Content Area Teachers deliver instruction to the ESL student population. There are two models utilized: Push In and Pull Out.
