Elementary School Program
Graystone Academy’s elementary curriculum provides students with an early intervention program that ensures continued growth from the kindergarten program to the secondary program. Subjects are thoughtfully sequenced and integrated into other disciplines to reinforce the connections made and the lessons learned. The elementary curriculum is designed to integrate skills and disciplines to make learning more meaningful, holistic and engaging. The school’s curriculums are based on state and national standards. Small group instruction, individual attention and differentiated instruction of the content are tailored to the educational needs of students.
All students are taught reading skills in decoding, as well as writing, speaking and listening and critical thinking, through a balanced literacy program. The language arts program consists of guided reading, paired reading, Kids’ writing, color coded writing and oral presentations. In addition a building reading specialist provides reading support to students who need additional assistance in reading. Spelling and handwriting instruction are part of the language arts curriculum.
Mathematics Curriculum
The mathematics curriculum is based on a state and national standards. Major concepts include: numbers and numerals, measurement, rational numbers, geometric shapes, decimals graphing, number theory and probability. These concepts are developed through a balanced use of manipulative materials.
All classrooms have computers with age-appropriate internet access. State-of-the-art computer lab provides instruction in technology skills. Special subject areas such as music, art, and physical education provide weekly to students. Special subject areas help students to express themselves while developing skills that promote self-expression and creativity.
Students are assessed with PSSA tests and the TerraNova assessment. Dibels and the Open Court reading comprehension tests are also administered in each grade along with reading inventories. Every student has an individual learning plan that describes his or her strengths and needs. A portfolio is developed for every child.
