Our School
Graystone Academy Charter School opened in 2002
as
a “tuition free” public school designed to challenge students
in a creative and educational way that enhances learning. The school
was founded by parents interested in alternatives to a traditional public
school education. In 1999, the first GACS Board
of Trustees was founded with the assistance of Mosaica
Education, Inc., a private management company. An application for
a charter was presented to the Coatesville Area School District and on
July 25, 2000, the application was accepted, and a three-year charter
was granted. It was extended to a five-year charter on October 25, 2000,
and extended again in 2006 until the year 2011.
As of September, 2006, Graystone has over 500 students enrolled in grades kindergarten
to tenth grade. The school intends to expand by one grade each year until it
is a K-12 school.
How is the school funded?
Under the Pennsylvania Charter School ACT 22 which governs charter school
law, charter schools receive approximately 80% of the school tax funds
from the enrolled students’ school district. Any student residing in PA is allowed to apply
for enrollment in Graystone. See Frequently Asked Questions for
